The British Way

July 21, 2009

Last time I was in London, I saw someone wearing this shirt and couldn’t help but laugh. The British truly do love their sausage rolls. As many of you know I am moving across the pond soon and thought I could consider this my celebratory post.

During the day the space functions as a gallery space, but at night At Proud truly comes alive.  The main room is an old horse hospital where each stall has been converted into personal dens for large groups to enjoy on their night on the town. If this gets dull, feel free to move into the adjacent room for live electronic, indie bands and FREE facepainting. During the summertime be sure to wander onto the large outdoor patio space in the back. Wherever you may find yourself at At Proud, you are sure to have a good time!

Shinichi Maruyama

June 30, 2009

Japanese photography Shinichi Maruyama captures the unique and ephemeral interaction between water, black ink and movement. Using strobe light photography, he is able to capture images before the mind perceives them and create prints that are powerful and interesting.

P.S. 1 Warm Up

June 24, 2009

Now that we have officially welcomed in the first day of summer, it is time to prepare for this year’s P.S. 1 Warm Up Party. Every summer the MoMA’s contemporary art outpost in Queens hosts a summer party on Saturday’s that is the closest thing you will find to an outdoor rave this side of the Atlantic (although I’m norave expert, so someone please feel free to correct me). Starting July 4 through September 5 the courtyard will blast with music from Reagenz toDaniel Bell aka DBX to Stars like Fleas. For $10 between 2pm-9pm on Saturdays, enjoy live music and experience the new “urban shelter” in the courtyard designed by MOS Studio, known as Afterparty. The outdoor art structures are shaped like conical, primitive huts that serve as a respite from the blaring summer sun.

Gjelina

June 23, 2009

Located in Venice along Abbot Kinney this “high-energy Mediterranean” restaurant features delicious food made from seasonal, local, organic ingredients. With two long communal tables in the main dining room and a uniquely made chandler – the place buzzes with energy during peak hours. Travis Lett, the young chef, offers an impressive menu of thin-crust pizza (think roasted baby artichokes, gremulata, parmesan – yum) and other fresh fare that keeps the crowds coming.

New Acropolis Museum

June 22, 2009

The construction had just begun when I was living in Athens, Greece in 2006, but this Saturday the New Acropolis Museum finally opened to the public. Designed by Bernard Tshumi the space offers a direct view of the Parthenon, as well as,  a strong argument in the on-going debate of the Elgin Marbles.

In the early 19th century, Lord Elgin, ordered the decorative frieze that adorned the Parthenon to be removed and later sold the famous marbles to the British Museum, where they are currently displayed. For the last two centuries, Greece has been working to regain the Elgin Marbles, although the British have long argued they have no proper place to store them. The New Acropolis Museum hopes to ruin that argument. Θέλω να παω…

Located in the heart of Marylebone, The Providores & Tapas Room is a welcomed escape from the busy high street. Inside the ground floor Tapas Room, customers enjoy specialities such as Turkish eggs (apparently from Changa in Istanbul) and other global-inspired tapas. Upstairs the Providores restaurant offers a roast that I am dying to try on my next visit.
